Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery lost 1-0 to the Atlanta Silverbacks Friday Night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 5,017. Scott Buete scored a late winner for Atlanta in the 90th minute to drop Charleston to a record of 4-4-3, 15 points, 7th position in the USL First Division.
The Battery players thought they had scored a go-ahead goal in the 18th minute. The ball was played in to forward Gavin Glinton just inside the box. Glinton controlled the pass, turned and tucked the ball past goalkeeper Felipe Quintero and into the goal. The referee quickly signaled no-goal however indicating that Glinton used his arm to control the ball.
In the 30th minute Battery midfielder Omar Daley collected a loose pass at the edge of the box. He lobbed the ball over Quintero but defender Matt Bobo headed the dipping attempt off the line.
In the 65th minute Daley slipped a neat pass to forward Ian Fuller just inside the box. Fuller in-turn, passed to Glinton who took a quick touch then fired at the goal. Quintero dropped quickly and managed to smother the shot.
Atlanta came close in the 81st minute as substitute forward Machel Millwood received the ball ten-yards out. Millwood turned quickly but his right-footed attempt was well-saved by Charleston goalkeeper Dusty Hudock.
The winning goal came in stoppage time at the end of the game. The ball was played forward down the left flank. Scott Buete ran onto the pass and hit a low shot into the middle of the goal that a diving Hudock could not prevent from going in.
The Battery is home again Wednesday night to play the Sonoma County Sol in the second round of the US Open Cup; gates open at 6:30 PM; kick off is set for 7:30 PM.
