Richmond Kickers News Release

Richmond, VA – (Sunday, May 23, 2004) – The Richmond Kickers were defeated tonight 1-0 by the Atlanta Silverbacks in overtime. Kickers midfielder, Richie Williams was ejected in the 71st minute by a dissention call, leaving Richmond with ten men on the field. The match remained scoreless until Atlanta's Ilarionov scored early in the second overtime.

Minute-By-Minute Highlights 15th minute: Chris Fox and an Atlanta player go up to receive a ball crossed high from the left flank by another Atlanta player. Both players collide, but Fox goes down with a cut above the right eye. After the play Fox goes off the field, and is taken out of the game two minutes later.

33rd minute: A sharp ball is played down the center of the field about thirty yards from the goal by Richmond to split two Atlanta defenders. Worthen makes the run through to shoot, but gets to the ball the same time as keeper Barton slides in, and the ball bounces away.

48th minute: A great ball is played in waist-high from the right edge of the penalty box to Jeffrey, who one-touch volleys the ball with the instep of his right foot. The ball is high and keeper Barton is able to fly in the air and tip it over the crossbar for a corner kick.

54th minute: A short corner gives Simms the ball on the left side near the corner. He takes a touch, looks up for a teammate, and plays it waist-high into the box. The ball slips in behind the keeper and Delicate is there flying in the air. His right foot connects with the ball and it goes back across the field, flush with the goal, where the Atlanta defense finally clears.

58th minute: An Atlanta player is tackled about 35 yards out on the left side of their attacking half and is rewarded by a direct kick. Leslie Fitzpatrick steps up to the ball and rips a shot headed directly for the upper left corner. Pascale is there to tap the ball over the bar for a corner.

87th minute: John Ball gains possession of the ball about forty yards out on the right flank and looks up. He sees a clear path to the goal so he fires a shot high to the near post upper corner. Pascale must quickly react and gets a touch on the ball, but it is not enough to play it over the bar, so it ricochets off the woodwork, but Pascale quickly recovers the ball. This is the second real opportunity for Atlanta, and both have been high shots from at least thirty yards out.

90th minute: Leslie Fitzpatrick beats a player and dribbles into the penalty box on the left side. Cozier is making a run into the box, so Fitzpatrick plays a square ball across the six yard box. Cozier controls and tries to touch the ball to his right to get off a shot, but Tony Williams is there to interrupt and get the ball out of the box.

OVERTIME

103rd minute: GOAL: Richmond 0, Atlanta 1: Ivo Ilarionov wins the ball on the right flank with his back to the goal about twenty yards out. Ilarionov turns, takes one touch, and shoots a rocket directly at the goal. Pascale doesn't even have time to react and the ball is in the net.
