Atlanta Silverbacks News Release

The Atlanta Silverbacks Women look to keep their unblemished record intact this weekend with two tough back-to-back games in Virginia. The lady gorillas will be facing the Northern Virginia Majestics this Saturday, June 4 at 7:30 p.m., and will then head down the road the next day to face the Richmond Kickers Destiny at 6 p.m.

Atlanta (3 wins - 0 draws - 0 losses) is in first place in the Atlantic Division of the USL W-League, tied on 9 points with the Central Florida Krush and the Charlotte Lady Eagles. The Silverbacks have had three outstanding performances so far in their inaugural season, with 4-3 and 1-0 wins against the Hampton Roads Piranhas and a 4-0 victory over the Bradenton Athletics. Kerry Gragg has led the Red-and-Black attack with three goals, followed by Marci Miller and Sarah Steinmann with two tallies each. Kelly Renie and Melanie Schneider are not far behind, with one goal apiece. Melanie Wilson has anchored the gorilla goal, with two shutouts in three matches.

Miller, one of the linchpins in the Silverbacks midfield, was invited to the training camp for the United States Women's National Team, which is preparing for its first home match of the year on June 26 against Canada at Virginia Beach. She will join the 23 other players on the US squad immediately after Atlanta's next home game on June 18 against the Kickers.

Northern Virginia (0-0-1) have only played a single match so far in 2005, a 3-1 loss to Richmond, with the Majestics' goal scored by Amy Swerdzinski. The blue-and-gold will host Atlanta on Saturday after a trip to the coast the night before to face Hampton Roads.

Richmond (1-0-1) comes into the weekend after a season-opening 2-0 loss to the Piranhas followed by a 3-1 win over the Majestics. The Kickers have a Friday night showdown at the Carolina Dynamo Women before returning home to host Atlanta on Sunday. The red-and-white kangaroos are led by goal-scorers Jennifer Parsons, Harumi Someya and Michelle Wycinsky.
