Silverbacks look for win in Virginia Beach
May 4, 2006 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
The Atlanta Silverbacks Men, 0-1-1, will head to Virginia tomorrow to take on the Virginia Beach Mariners and attempt to add a game to the win column. The Silverbacks did not have a regular season game last weekend and used the time to prepare for the Mariners and the remainder of the season.
"We spent some time reviewing film and I think we've gotten a little sharper. I also feel we're better prepared for this weekend than we were going into the Puerto Rico weekend. The guys have had a weekend without a game and I think that makes everyone eager to play again," commented Head Coach Jason Smith.
Liam George, a newcomer to the Silverbacks, scored a goal in both games over the first weekend. He says the team is building a strong chemistry, "We've been training very hard and I think we're very focused for this weekend's game, hopefully we'll get the right result. Having the weekend without a game has been good because we've been able to work on a lot of things, especially combining as a pair up top."
The Silverbacks faced the Mariners three times last season, winning two games and losing one.
SILVERBACKS' MILLWOOD SCORES GOLDEN GOAL IN MISL CHAMPIONSHIP
Atlanta Silverbacks' forward Machel Millwood led the Baltimore Blast to their third Major Indoor Soccer League Championship in four years after he scored the "Golden Goal" to beat the St. Louis Steamers this past Sunday, April 30. The title-winning goal was Millwood's second "Golden Goal" in four games. During the semi-finals, he put in a golden goal to help the Blast slide past the Milwaukee Wave and advance to the finals. The MISL championship was a two-game aggregate series with Baltimore winning the first game and St. Louis winning the second. Millwood put the ball in the back of the net and ended the Golden Goal session at the 6:33 minute mark. For the past six months, Millwood has been on loan to Baltimore but will return to Atlanta next week to join the Silverbacks.
The Silverbacks Men have one month until their home opener on June 3 at 7:30 pm. The opening of the new stadium will include an exciting game against the Charleston Battery, an appearance by the Atlanta Drumline, and a fireworks show.
