Silverbacks Join the GLIFL

July 27, 2006 - Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) - Dayton Silverbacks News Release

The Miami Valley Silverbacks have signed a three-year contract with the Great Lakes Indoor Football League (GLIFL), headquartered in Canton, Ohio. The contract term will begin with the 2007 season and run through the 2009 season. The Silverbacks spent their inaugural season in the American Indoor Football League (AIFL).

The GLIFL plays a 12 game regular season; six home games and six road games. The move to the GLIFL will put the Silverbacks in a four-team Ohio division that will include Marion, Wayne County and Steubenville. There will also be a four-team Michigan division. The Silverbacks will potentially play two of those teams both home and away during the regular season.

"This is a very positive move for the Silverbacks. We've met with the GLIFL leadership on many occasions and feel very confident in how the league is operated, "commented Silverbacks' Owner/President, Jeff Kolaczkowski. "The GLIFL had a very strong first season and this move affords us the opportunity to play teams very close to home. This will cut down on the team's operating expenses as well as build strong rivalries."

The team will have to adjust on the field. The GLIFL plays seven-man football, instead of the customary eight-man that most indoor football leagues play. There are some additional rule differences but the coaches insist that will make the game much more exciting.

"Playing in the GLIFL gives us and the fans the opportunity to play some exciting football," stated Silverbacks Head Coach/GM Matt King. "Among other changes, we will have the ability to blitz and put a man in motion. The look of the game will be similar to outdoor football but will have even more action than what our fans have become accustomed to."

Moving to the GLIFL

Head Coach/General Manager Matt King

"We are very excited about this move to the Great Lakes Indoor Football League. We've met with the league on several occasions and really like the set up and operation. We feel this is a good fit for the team on many levels."

Owner/President Jeff Kolaczkowski

"This is a great opportunity for the team. The structure and leadership of the Great Lakes Indoor Football League are very solid and supportive. This move will allow us to play teams closer to home, thereby allowing our fans the chance to support the team on the road."

Seven on seven football

Head Coach/General Manager Matt King

"Seven-man football will be a change for us, but not one that we can't easily adjust to. Fans won't lose any sense of excitement. There will still be a lot of scoring and a lot of action."

Defensive Coordinator Carl Allen

"This type of game gives us a lot more flexibility on the field. We can put a man in high motion. We now have the ability to blitz more often; anyone who is five yards off the line of scrimmage is eligible. Our team has a lot of talent and the rules of the Great Lakes game will allow us to showcase our talent."

Leaving the AIFL Head Coach/General Manager Matt King

"The Great Lakes Indoor Football League is new territory for us. It's a new game with new rules and new teams. This move was an opportunity that we couldn't pass on. We want to improve the team's chances of bringing a championship home to Troy."

Owner/President Jeff Kolaczkowski

"A lot of thought and discussion went into making this decision, and believe me, it was not an easy one to make. As a team owner, I feel very comfortable with my decision. We are departing the AIFL on good terms and wish the AIFL and it's member teams the best for next season. "
