Atlanta Silverbacks News Release

The Atlanta Silverbacks begin first round play of the 2007 U.S. Open Cup tonight when they host Azzurri FC at 7:55 pm at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium. The U.S. Open Cup is a nationwide tournament open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer ranging from United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) teams to Major League Soccer teams. Azzurri FC, an Italian club out of USASA Region III, is making its third appearance in four years in the tournament. The Dallas-based club has been unable to post a victory in their previous two entries.

The Silverbacks' U.S. Open Cup history began in 2002 when the team beat the PDL-side Memphis Express and lost to the MLS-side FC Dallas 2-1 in overtime. The Silverbacks have qualified every year since their exciting 2002 tournament debut, but the team has only won one other U.S. Open Cup match for a 2-5-0 tournament record. The Silverbacks hope to have a successful run in this year's tournament which begins tonight. Tickets to see the Silverbacks in the 2007 U.S. Open Cup can be purchased over the phone at 404-969-4900 or at the RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium box office.

The Silverbacks (3-4-3) are coming off a 0-0 tie to the Seattle Sounders. Atlanta currently sits in tenth place of the USL First Division with 12 points. The 'Backs will continue regular season play this Saturday, June 16 against the expansion-side California Victory at 7:55 pm at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium. SILVERBACKS WOMEN DEFEND FIRST PLACE AT HOME THIS WEEKEND - LAST CHANCE FOR FANS TO GET A SILVERBACKS SCARF

The Atlanta Silverbacks Women beat the Richmond Kickers Destiny 1-0 last Friday night (6.8.07); the win, coupled with Richmond's win on Sunday against the Fredericksburg Lady Gunners, puts Atlanta and Richmond tied for first place with 12 points and a 4-1-0 record.

The Atlanta-Richmond match on Friday night was settled 1-0 after a 30-minute lightning delay interrupted second-half play. Team co-captains Christine Latham and Krista Davey combined to score the game-winning goal just two minutes after play resumed from the delay. Davey perfectly lofted a free kick into the box behind the Destiny's defensive wall to an oncoming Latham who flicked the ball with her head past her defender and Richmond's goalkeeper.

The Silverbacks Women will continue their home stand on Friday night (6.15.07) against the Bradenton Athletics at 7:55 pm at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium. The Silverbacks will be giving out the extremely popular 2007 Silverbacks scarves - get to the game early if you want to receive a complimentary scarf.
