June 27, 2006 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
The Atlanta Silverbacks Men will continue their hunt for the 2007 Southern Derby Cup this Friday night at 7:30 pm when they take on the Charleston Battery for the fourth and final time this season. The Silverbacks will have home field advantage at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium and will look to stay undefeated at home. The Silverbacks and the Battery met just last weekend in Charleston with Atlanta bringing home a 1-0 win from a goal by Scott Buete in stoppage time. Three Silverbacks were named to the USL Team of the Week this week for their performances against Charleston last weekend. Felipe Quintero, Matt Bobo, and Scott Buete all received honors this week. This year, the Southern Derby Cup consists of two games - Charleston's last home game against Atlanta (6.23) and Atlanta's last home game against Charleston (6.30). In years past, the cup included more games when Raleigh and Charlotte participated, however, both teams are no longer in the USL First Division. The Silverbacks have won the cup three times: 2002, 2004, and 2005* (*co-champions with Charleston). A win Friday night will keep the cup in Atlanta for another year and improve the Silverbacks record to 4-4-3. Come out to see the Silverbacks defend their home field and protect the Southern Derby Cup in an exciting game against the Charleston Battery. Tickets for this weekends game are available, however, after midnight on Thursday night remaining tickets will only be available through the online print-at-home option. Tickets will also be available at the stadium box office starting at 5:00 pm on Friday. Please purchase your tickets early! Upper level parking opens at 5:30 pm and the stadium gates open at 6:00 pm. SILVERBACKS WOMEN TAKE ON COCOA EXPOS The Atlanta Silverbacks Women will take on the Cocoa Expos this Saturday night at 7:30 pm at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium. Atlanta is coming off a big win from last Saturday night when they beat the number one ranked Charlotte Lady Eagles. The Silverbacks also beat the Central Florida Krush over the weekend; the two wins brought Atlantas record to 5-3 and bumped the team to third place in the Atlantic Division. The Silverbacks now sit just three points shy of the Richmond Kickers Destiny. Sarah Steinmann played a huge role in the Silverbacks success over the weekend; she scored three goals in two games (one goal against Central Florida and two goals against Charlotte). Steinmann continues to lead the team in scoring and she's currently ranked 6th for goals scored in the W-League with eight goals. The Cocoa Expos are new to the W-League and Saturday nights game will be the first ever match-up between the Expos and the Silverbacks Women.
