COACH'S CORNER:
Silver Stars' Head Coach Dan Hughes' thoughts on last week's play and this week's opponents:
on the way the Silver Stars' played last week-
"I thought a couple things came out of last week. One was the play of our rookies, which I take as a good sign. Shyra Ely continues to make improvements in her rookie season and Katie Feenstra did a nice job in both games. The second thing, quite honestly, was our play all around. We rebounded a little better offensively and we played both games at a decent defensive level. I think our main area of concern right now is turnovers. I think the best way to start the last portion of our season is with a great effort in Indiana."
on the Indiana Fever-
"I think Indiana has made nice improvement throughout the year. Obviously you start with Tamika Catchings who in many ways has the best all around game in the WNBA. When you compliment that with Natalie Williams inside, your looking at a veteran team that has the ability to play very well in the half court. Plus, they are on a good roll right now, winning two in a row since the break, and have been a strong team at home."
on the Phoenix Mercury-
"Since Phoenix has last played us, they have made progress with three straight wins. They are getting significant scoring out of Diana Tarausi, Anna Deforge and Penny Taylor. Taylor has really stepped up her play and has become a vital peg in the Mercury's offensive machine. Also, with Maria Stepanova's presence inside, they have gained great mobility. I think Phoenix is one of the hottest offensive teams I've seen since the break."
SILVER STARS IN THE COMMUNITY
On Wednesday, Silver Stars forward Kendra Wecker will present the Carver Academy with a check for over $3,700. Last month, Spurs season ticket holders were given the opportunity to purchase tickets through a special package to the Silver Stars Faith Night game featuring former San Antonio Spur David Robinson. A portion of the proceeds collected from the package sales were then donated to the Spurs Foundation who chose the Carver Academy to be the recipient of the $3,793 raised from package sales. The Carver Academy's hope is to inspire students to be good citizens exemplifying the principles of leadership, discipline, initiative and integrity.
