San Antonio Stars News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Silver Stars have signed all-star forward Sophia Young to a four-year contract extension, announced head coach and General Manager Dan Hughes today. Per team policy, terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
"We are thrilled to announce an agreement that will keep Sophia Young as part of the Silver Stars family for the coming years," said Hughes. "Sophia is one of the truly special players of the WNBA. Her passion for improvement is unmatched and we join with our fans in anxiously awaiting the future in San Antonio with Sophia Young."
A two-time all-star, Young led San Antonio in scoring her rookie season, before earning second-team All-WNBA honors in 2007 and first team All-WNBA honors in 2008. Last season, Young averaged a career-best 17.5 points per game, along with 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. During the playoffs she averaged 17.7 points per game and was lauded for hitting an impossible game-winner at the buzzer during the Western Conference Finals.
Young, who earned her first Western Conference Player of the Week honor in 2008, finished fourth in league MVP voting last season after putting up the best season of her career. She ranked among the league's top 10 in points, steals and free throws. In October, her alma mater Baylor University retired her jersey recognizing Young as the most decorated player in Lady Bear history.
The Silver Stars open the 2009 June 6 at Phoenix before hosting New York on June 13 at the AT&T Center. Affordable full and partial season ticket plans are on sale now. Visit www.sasilverstars.com or call (210) 444.5090 for more information.
