San Antonio Stars News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Silver Stars open their 2011 season tomorrow - Saturday, June 4 - against the visiting Tulsa Shock at 7 p.m. in the AT&T Center. It marks the second-consecutive year the team will open its season at home.
Opening night presented by St. Philip's College is Dollar Night at the AT&T Center with tickets starting at $10 dollars and $1 beer, fountain drinks and hot dogs. The band Lavish Luck will also be performing at Overtime after the game in the Bud Light Courtyard.
Head coach and general manager Dan Hughes returns to the sidelines in 2011 after assuming a full-time general manager role last season. Hughes is the winningest coach in San Antonio history with 79 wins in five seasons. Joining the coaching staff is former Silver Star Vickie Johnson - who announced her retirement following the 2009 season - and Steve Shuman.
The Silver Stars return five veterans from the 2010 team, including perennial WNBA All-Stars Becky Hammon and Sophia Young. Hammon and Young led the squad with 15.1 and 15.3 points per game, respectively, while returning centers Ruth Riley and Jayne Appel averaged 2.3 and 2.5 rebounds per game, respectively. Guard Roneeka Hodges rounds out the returners for San Antonio, after averaging 7.7 points and 3.2 rebounds per game last season.
Hughes bolstered the roster with offseason moves aimed at adding athletic and defensive minded personnel. San Antonio signed free agent Tully Bevilaqua - a 12-year WNBA veteran and six-time WNBA All-Defensive team honoree - and traded for guard Jia Perkins, who led the WNBA in steals to turnover ratio (1.40) last season. San Antonio also acquired guard Scholanda Robinson - who averaged 11.9 points per game last season - in a trade with Tulsa.
Rookies Danielle Robinson, Danielle Adams and Porsha Phillips complete the 2011 opening day roster. Robinson was selected by San Antonio with the sixth overall pick in the draft out of Oklahoma, while Adams joins the team fresh off leading nearby Texas A&M to its first national championship. Phillips is one of two third round draft picks featured on an opening day roster out of Georgia where she averaged 10.7 rebounds per game as a senior.
Silver Stars individual tickets are available now at all San Antonio Ticketmaster locations, including by phone at (210) 225-TEAM, or online at ticketmaster.com or sasilverstars.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. or on weekend event days starting at 10 a.m. or by calling 210-444-5090.
