San Antonio Stars News Release

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Silver Stars have declared their 7 p.m., Sept. 1 game with Minnesota at the AT&T Center "Vickie Johnson Night" in honor of the all-star guard's final season in the WNBA.

Johnson has played more WNBA games than any other player in the history of the league, recently logging her 400th appearance. She played the first game in league history on June 21, 1997, helping the New York Liberty to a 67-57 win over the Los Angeles Sparks. She announced in June that 2009, her 13th WNBA season, would be her last.

The first 2,500 fans in attendance Tuesday night will receive commemorative Vickie Johnson posters, while the team will honor Johnson pre-game and will air highlights from throughout her career during the game.

"I really enjoyed my 13 years in the league and I can truly say every time I stepped on the court, I gave 110 percent, and I hope and pray the fans saw my hard work and dedication to the game every night," said Johnson who helped guide teams to the WNBA Finals five times in her career.

Johnson is one of only three players who have suited up for every season of the league's existence (Tina Thompson and Tamecka Dixon are the other two). She has played more games (403) and more minutes (12,261) than any other player in league history. She ranks among the top 10 all-time in field goals, both made (seventh - 1,602) and attempted (sixth - 3,726), as well as sixth all-time in assists (1,183) and eighth in points (4,184).

Johnson spent the first nine seasons of her WNBA career with the New York Liberty before signing with San Antonio as a free agent in February 2006, becoming the first building block of Dan Hughes' 2008 Western Conference Champion squad.

She still ranks first all-time in the New York Liberty record books in eight categories, including points. She ranks second in rebounds, assists and steals.

The winner of the WNBA's 2008 Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award, Johnson has averaged 10.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game throughout her WNBA career. She also has played professionally in Israel, France, Hungary and Turkey. A Louisiana native, Johnson played collegiately at Louisiana Tech where she was a two-time All-American and a member of the 1994 NCAA All-Final Four team.

Individual tickets for the 2009 Silver Stars season are on sale and can be purchased by phone at 210-444-5090, online at sasilverstars.com or at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office. The box office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on weekend event days at 10 a.m. All Silver Stars games are broadcast live on KTKR/Ticket 760.
