Chico Outlaws News Release
RENO, NV - The scene shifted to Peccole Park on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, but the result was the same: the Reno Silver Sox, fresh off of two road wins in Chico, returned home to face the Outlaws and posted a convincing 10-3 victory in front of over 2,100 fans. The win was the fifth in a row for the Silver Sox, while the Outlaws have dropped three straight.
Chico got on the board in the 2nd when Whit Pierce's two-out single plated Craig Kuzmic...but the Outlaws missed a chance at a big inning by leaving the bases loaded. Reno answered back in the bottom of the 2nd, taking the lead on Philip Grau's two-run homer off Chico starting pitcher Alex Perez. The Outlaws had a couple of golden opportunities to re-take the lead off Silver Sox starter Jason Martinez, but wasted a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the 3rd inning and left runners at second and third in the 4th. In the bottom of the 4th Reno batted around, and aided by a throwing error, three walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches, the Silver Sox needed just two hits in the inning to score four times and grab a comfortable 6-1 advantage.
The Outlaws pulled to within three runs in the 5th - Mike Mallory lined a solo homer (his second of the year) over the left field wall...then doubles by Kuzmic and Lino Garcia plated another run and made the score 6-3. But Reno would once again answer in the bottom of the 5th when Mike Done clubbed a two-run homer to right off Chico reliever Jake McKinley, putting the Silver Sox back in front by five. While Martinez and Reno relievers Josh Shackelford and Mike McKernan shut down the Outlaws the rest of the way, the Silver Sox put two more on the board in the 8th against new Chico reliever Mike Cosgrove...Victor Hall knocked in Grau with a sacrifice fly, then Done came home on a base hit by Evan Sobel to make the score 10-3. McKernan worked a scoreless 9th inning to lock down Reno's third straight victory over the Outlaws this year.
Martinez (1-1) picked up his first-ever professional victory, allowing just two earned runs in six innings of work...Perez (1-1) did not survive the 3rd, giving up six runs in suffering the loss. Garcia had two of the seven Chico hits on the night...Grau finished 3-for-4 and scored three times to pace Reno, who with Saturday's victory improves their league-best record to 7-2...the Outlaws dropped to 5-5. Game two of the mini-series is set for Sunday afternoon in Reno - Chico sends right-hander Nick Singleton (2-0) to the mound, while the Silver Sox counter with righty Jared Bonnell (0-0). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm.
