San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
SAN DIEGO - The Surf Dawgs (4-7) finally scored first, a recipe that led to their first win since their home opener last Monday. With the 8-6 win over Long Beach (4-6), their franchise long five-game losing streak came to a halt and they salvaged one game of the four-game set.
San Diego had only been swept once in their inaugural championship season of 2005. History was definitely in their favor and it seemed as if all was well in the first inning. An early error by Jeremy Hernandez of the Armada led to three first inning runs for the Surf Dawgs.
The Armada would counter with one run in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth. Hernandez atoned for his error with a solo homerun in the second. An error by Justin Moore of the Surf Dawgs in the third led to two unearned runs coming across for the Armada. Adonis Harrison, who was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and 3 SB, hit a sacrifice fly to give the Armada a 4-3 lead in the fourth. Starting pitcher Marcos Mendoza gave up only 2 earned runs in 5 innings pitched.
High energy Adam Mandel hit his first professional homerun in his second year with the Surf Dawgs. Brent Pourciau (1-2), who had a shaky outing Thursday in the opener of the series, came in to hold the lead. He promptly gave up a homerun to Jason Collette to keep Mendoza from the win. After five and a half innings, the game was tied at five.
The Surf Dawgs would take the lead in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs and one runner on base Matthew Connolly went deep to right-center field for his second home run in three days to give San Diego a 7-5 lead.
San Diego's closer Josh Rummonds, in only his third appearance of the season, came in to try and close it down in the ninth. After striking out the first two batters he gave up back-to-back singles to Chris Klemm and Ryan Stevenson and walked Jason Collette to load the bases. Rummonds would get out of the hairy situation by inducing a fly ball from leadoff hitter Ryan Webb.
The Fullerton Flyers (3-6) land in San Diego tomorrow for their first visit of the 2006 season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PST. Tomorrow night is a Military Monday at Tony Gwynn Stadium; all members of the military can buy two tickets and get one free with proper identification.
