Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

ROCHESTER, NY - The Syracuse Silver Knights defeated the Rochester Lancers 15-14 in one of their most exciting endings this season. The Knights came out on top, showing some heart with a five point fourth quarter.

Having beaten the Lancers every time they have faced this season, Syracuse came in with some confidence despite their recent struggles. The Knights took advantage of an early power play, setting up some beautiful offensive runs. With just four seconds left in the advantage, Slavisa Ubiparapovic assisted Neto in a close range goal to give the Knights the early 2-0 lead. The lead did not last long, as the Lancers got on the board just 30 seconds later. After an intense first quarter with seemingly even possession time, the Lancers grabbed a scoring opportunity just before the quarter expired.

The Knight's defense worked hard to hold off two of the leagues leading scorers, the Lancers' Salles and Miller. Bryan O'Quinn was challenged by the duo early, but passed the test with some impressive back-to-back saves, keeping the game tight. After Salles responded with his third goal of the game, the Knights really turned on an impressive offensive surge.

The Knights took advantage of a power play midway through the second period and did not turn back from there. Jamar Beasley finished a beautifully placed goal with the help of Bryan Perez. Minutes later, Jelovac rocketed a side- footed goal into the upper 90 from just inside the arc, tying the score and quieting the home crowd. Still, the Knights kept attacking. As the quarter came to a close, Syracuse scored twice in the last minute of play. They headed into the locker room after a great quarter, boasting a 10-6 lead.

Syracuse looked like a different team in the third quarter. The Lancers replied to the Syracuse offense right out of halftime, putting on an equally impressive offensive showing. After an 8-0 run in favor of the Knights, the Lancers responded with an 8-0 run of their own. Rochester netted four goals off the feet of four different players, gaining the lead, 14-10.

Tension rose between both teams and the fourth quarter was a much more physical, fast paced game. The Knights kept fighting and after ten minutes of back and fourth play, they capitalized on a scoring opportunity. Slavisa set up Nate Bourdeau on a beautiful diagonal pass through the Lancers' defense to come within one score. Seconds before Tommy Tanner put in a sixth striker, Marcos Chantel rocketed a three point gem from far past the arc, netting the winning goal with less than 2 minutes left. In what proved to be one of the most exciting wins to date, the Knights ended their 5 game skid and will head back to Syracuse on top.

The Silver Knights return home next Friday, January 18, to take on the first-place Baltimore Blast at 7:30 p.m. Both teams will return to The Oncenter War Memorial Arena for a rematch on Sunday, January 20, at 1:30 p.m. The team is offering a "Blast Pack" ticket special, $25 for one ticket to each game or two tickets to one game.
