Silver Knights Trip Over SharX

February 14, 2012 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

In their final away game of the season, the Syracuse Silver Knights fell to the Norfolk SharX 21-17 on Tuesday night. The SharX dealt a blow to the Knights' playoff run in front of 1,280 at the Norfolk Scope Arena.

Cory Elenio was the star of the night for Syracuse. His three-goal effort gave him his first hat trick this season. Two of the goals came back-to-back over the first five minutes of the second half. Elenio also had an assist on the evening, giving him seven total points on the scoresheet.

The SharX came out firing and scored in the third minute, but the Silver Knights fired back and ended the first quarter with a goal by Andriy Budnyy and a three-pointer by Enrique Tovar. Norfolk came out strong again in the second quarter. They found the net four times with two three pointers, while only Budnyy was able to find net for Syracuse.

But the Silver Knights were the ones with the strong start to the second half. Elenio scored his first two goals of the night. He was quickly followed by two goals from J.D. Gruenewald. Syracuse entered the fourth quarter with a 15-12 lead, their largest of the night.

Two penalty kicks for the SharX in the fourth quarter cut the Knights' lead. After the third goal from SharX leading scorer Matt Clare put Norfolk ahead by a point, the Silver Knights used Nelson Santana as the sixth attacker to find the game winner. But with Santana out of the net, the SharX found the decisive goal.

The loss drops the Silver Knights to one half game behind the Rochester Lancers for the final Eastern Division playoff spot. The Lancers face the Wichita Wings in Rochester on Saturday while the Silver Knights have a weekend off before entering the final leg of the regular season.

Come out and supper the Silver Knights as they return to the War Memorial at Oncenter next Wednesday the 22nd for the first of their final three home games of the regular season. The Silver Knights first host the league-leading Milwaukee Wave, then face the Wichita Wings three days later on Saturday the 25th. Both games are at 7:00 PM. Syracuse then closes out the regular season against Eastern Division winner Baltimore Blast at 4:00 PM on Sunday, March 4. Fans can buy tickets to all three games at the Oncenter box office or through SyracuseSilverKnights.com.
