Syracuse Silver Knights News Release
Syracuse, NY. - The Syracuse Silver Knights are pleased to announce the re-signing of the shifty attacking midfielder Kenardo Forbes, the versatile utility player Jon "JD" Gruenewald, and the rock-solid goalkeeper, Bryan O'Quinn.
A local CNY native and alumnus of Fayetteville- Manlius High School, "JD" Gruenewald was a key player for Coach Tanner and his staff last season as his unique skill set allowed him to play at any position on the field. Officially listed as a defender, Gruenewald scored 9 goals and 19 points in 17 games played.
"It feels great to be back for another season this upcoming winter," the 25-year-old said. "Last year meant so much to me playing in front of my friends and family while representing my hometown. I think our team made large strides from the beginning to the end of last season, and I'm confident the team will continue to build on the momentum we built last year."
When asked about his expectations for the upcoming campaign, Gruenewald responded, "We have the core of our team returning from last year, but we have made some major additions. I expect our team to make the next step as a playoff team this year, and I appreciate the Silver Knight organization allowing me to be a part of what is sure to be a very exciting season."
Kenardo Forbes, a 24-year-old from Kingston, Jamaica, played in 13 games last season while putting up a solid total of 9 points.
"I really want to thank the coaching staff for giving me another opportunity," said Forbes. "While last season served as a true learning experience, I feel as though I did not play up to my true ability. With my experiences from last year, I believe I can be a true asset to the team and make the coaching staff proud. I hope to become a fan favorite through my hard work, both on and off the field."
Bryan O'Quinn, a native of Feeding Hills, Massachusetts and alumnus of Agawam High School, had been retired from professional soccer for five years before joining the Silver Knights last season. The 32-year-old moved to Syracuse with his wife to pursue careers and had continued to play soccer in competitive recreational leagues.
"When I came to Syracuse, I thought I had ultimately retired from playing professionally," said the 5'11" goalkeeper.
"I moved here with my wife as she was coming to go to medical school and so I decided I was done with professional soccer and that I would just play in men's leagues in the Syracuse area and just kind of kick back and have fun. When Tommy, Pete and Jon Ramin, and Doug put this team together, I couldn't really pass up the offer. It's been five or six years since I've played professionally, but hey you might as well give it a shot if it's in your backyard."
Last season, O'Quinn played in eight games for the Silver Knights, bolstering an incredible .759 save percentage, highest among all MISL goalkeepers with at least five games played.
The Syracuse Silver Knights begin the 2012-2013 season on Friday, November 2nd, at 7:30 PM against the Chicago Soul at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena.
