Syracuse Silver Knights News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Silver Knights (1-1) play for the first time at home this season on Friday, November 10th, as the Ontario Fury (1-0) come to Central New York. The Silver Knights are hosting the CNY Celebration of Soccer Home Opener.
The Silver Knights return from a California trip with a win and a loss. Syracuse defeated Turlock in its season opener before losing to San Diego. Ontario defeated Turlock in its season opener.
Here are five things to watch in Friday's game:
1. Home Sweet Home
Syracuse has historically done very well in its home opener. The Silver Knights are 5-1 in home openers - the lone loss coming in the 2012-13 MISL season against Chicago. Last season, Syracuse defeated Harrisburg, 5-2. Andrew Coughlin made 14 saves in that game. The closest victory came in the 2011-12 MISL season against Rochester, 16-15. As for the largest margin of victory....
2. Remember Me?
Syracuse has opened a season at home before against Ontario. That matchup came in the 2014-15 MASL season. The Silver Knights dominated that game, winning by a score of 18-2. This was during the multi-point scoring era of the MASL. Kenardo Forbes had a hat trick and an assist in that match. Slavisa Ubiparipovic added two goals and an assist of his own.
3. Team of the Week
Speaking of the Bosnian, Ubiparipovic was named to the MASL Team of the Week for his performance last weekend in California. He scored the first goal for the Silver Knights in both matches. On the weekend, Ubiparipovic recorded three goals and three assists.
4. Furious Strike Partnership
Ontario brings a strong strike partnership up top. Leonardo de Oliveria led the Fury in goals (31), assists (20), and points (51) last season. Francisco Cordeiro was third in Ontario for goals (15) and points (21). The duo recorded a goal and three assists each in Ontario's win against Turlock.
5. Danger in the Defense
Ontario also had a player earn MASL Team of the Week honors. Defender Thiago Goncalves scored three goals and added an assist. Goncalves has already equalized his point total from last season. He also has already eclipsed his goal total from last season. The defender only scored twice for the Fury last year.
The match against the Fury kicks off at 7:05 p.m. at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena. For tickets and more information, contact 315-303-7261 or log onto www.syracusesilverknights.com. Fans who cannot make it to the match can view the contest online on the MASLTV YouTube channel.
