Silver Knights Fall to Wave in Final Game of Season

March 2, 2013 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) - Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

MILWAUKEE, WI.--The Syracuse Silver Knights finished out their 2012-13 season on Saturday night in Milwaukee. The Knights dropped their finale game to the second place Wave, 10-6.

The Knights came out strong in the first quarter ready to finish out the season with a strong performance. Ryan Pierce got the Knights on the board just 5 minutes into the game, finishing a nice assist from Andriy Budnyy. The game pace was very quick with a lot of back and fourth play from both sides.

The Wave found their first goal of the game halfway through the quarter, but Syracuse quickly responded just 30 seconds later with another score. Bozidar Jelovac placed the ball perfectly into the bottom corner of the goal to take the lead back for the Knights, 4-2.

After Bryan O'Quinn's slide carried him beyond the box and resulted in a handball, the Wave got the chance for a shoot out penalty. O'Quinn made a tremendous save to kill the penalty opportunity and keep the scoreboard in favor of Syracuse.

Unfortunately for the Knights' star keeper, O'Quinn suffered a leg injury after he over extended his knee. He was unable to stay in the game and was helped off the field towards the end of the first quarter.

The Wave were able to steal a goal off a power play, sporting a 5-3 man advantage, and the game headed into the second quarter tied, 4-4.

The Knights held their own and greatly improved upon their shots on goal from the night before, matching the Waves with 7. O'Quinn's replacement goalie, Derek Popovich played a great second quarter making some impressive reaction saves.

The Wave were able to score once more before half and the Knights headed into the locker room trailing 6-4.

The game got very physical in the second half, and the Knights found themselves back on their heels during many of the Wave's offensive attacks. Step in goalkeeper Popovich made some great stops and kept Syracuse in the game.

About halfway through the third quarter, the Wave scored the first goal of the half off a blast from just outside the box. The Knights now trialed 8-4.

Syracuse struggled to find quality shots on goal, with only two in the third quarter. They headed into the final period trailing by two scores and looking to end their season with a solid finish.

Syracuse worked hard and pressured the ball throughout the fourth quarter, getting some great looks on goal. The Knights played a much more controlled quarter, settling with the ball, maintaining good possession and making some great runs for the goal. With only 1:30 left, Jelovac found the back of the net with a nicely placed touch just past the Waves' keeper for his second score of the night.

The Wave responded with a final score and were able to hold off the Knights, winning 10-6.
