Syracuse Silver Knights News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Silver Knights fell to the Chicago Soul tonight, 14-11, despite putting forth a strong team effort in front of an electric crowd of 3,967 fans.
The hometown Knights took the field in the first-quarter displaying the fluid possession game that Coach Tanner's squad has lacked at times in the early portion of the season. Multiple series' of intricate passes created a barrage of Silver Knights' scoring chances, but Chicago goalkeeper Jeff Richey was equal to the task on each occasion.
After a scoreless first quarter, Chicago brought themselves back into the flow of the game and were able to break open the scoring five minutes into the second as team captain, Matthew Stewart, slotted a close-range rebound goal past an outstretched Bryan O'Quinn.
Despite surrendering another 2-point tally just two minutes later, Slavisa Ubiparipovic and the Silver Knights brought the hometown faithful back to life with a three-point bomb from the top of the box. The fans were sent into a full-blown frenzy just seconds later with a goal from new signing Bozidar Jelovac, giving the home side a 5-4 advantage.
It looked like the Silver Knights would go into the half-time break carrying a powerful surge of momentum, but Matthew Stewart capitalized on a rare spell of defensive confusion from the home team and calmly finished another point-blank opportunity with just seven tenths of a second left on the second quarter clock for his second of three goals on the game.
Instrumental in both offensive and defensive Syracuse success, Nelson Santana made an immediate impact in the third quarter by quarterbacking the defense and assisting on goals from Neto and Kenardo Forbes, giving the Knights a 9-6 lead going into the final frame.
Looking to close-out their second win of the season, Syracuse went into the final quarter continuing their pin-point passing and holding possession. Matthew Stewart proved why he is Chicago's captain as he intercepted a Silver-Knight pass and rocketing a screaming shot off the post and into the top corner, rendering goalkeeper Bryan O'Quinn helpless and bringing the visitors within one point.
Chicago continued to take air out of the stadium with a furious surge of momentum as they went on to score an additional three consecutive goals, two from forward Carlos Munoz to complete his hat trick, taking the Chicago lead to 14-9 with just under three minutes left in the game. Finishing the night with a tremendous total of 26 saves, Jeff Richey, stopped all eight Silver Knights' shots in the fourth before surrendering a last minute goal from Neto.
The Silver Knights return home next weekend with a game Friday night, November 30, at 7 p.m. against Missouri and another Sunday, December 2, against the rival Rochester Lancers at 4 p.m. Call the Silver Knights office for information on tickets.
