Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

SYRACUSE, New York - The Syracuse Silver Knights (11-8, #2 in Eastern Division) lost at home 9-7 to the Rochester Lancers (10-9, #3 in Eastern Division) in the Thruway Rivalry.

Bo Jelovac opened the scoring for Syracuse midway through the first quarter putting the Knights up 2-0. The Serb held off his defender in the area and shot the ball into the roof of the net to give the 'Cuse the lead.

That lead did not last long however, a minute after the opener Rochester forward Yakiel Perez found space at the top of Syracuse's arc and slid a shot in between Bryan O'Quinn's legs. Perez's strike tied the game at 2.

At the 2:48 mark in the opening quarter the Lancers took their first lead of the game on a beautiful left-footed strike by Mauricio Salles. The Brazilian received the ball on the right side of the attacking third, cut inside and curled his shot past O'Quinn to make it 4-2 Rochester.

In the second quarter, the Lancers added to their lead through Jeremy Ortiz. The forward held off Domenico Vitale in the area and cranked a right-footed shot from close range that beat O'Quinn putting Rochester up 6-2.

With 4:42 to play in the third quarter the Lancers scored a three-pointer. Rochester forward Andrew Hoxie received a through ball and was in on goal after a Nelson Santana free kick struck the Lancer wall. Hoxie brought O'Quinn out of the area and slid the ball into the left side netting making the score 9-2 Rochester.

A minute later Cory Elenio pulled a goal back for the Knights off of a great pass from Slav Ubiparipovic putting the score at 9-4 in favor of the Lancers. Elenio made a run into the area and Ubiparipovic nailed a pass off of the boards that fell right to the former Columbus Crew man and he buried his shot.

Kenardo Forbes cut Syracuse's deficit to just 2 early in the fourth quarter on a three-point blast. The Jamaican received the ball of the left side of the arc, cut inside and buried his shot at Rochester keeper Marcelo Moreira's near post making the score 9-7.

SSK pulled O'Quinn and replaced him with Forbes with 1:30 to go in the match to add a sixth attacker. Syracuse was not able to score in the dying moments though and the Lancers won their first game of the year at the War Memorial.

Postgame coach Tommy Tanner said his team was wasteful in the game: "We just missed a ton of chances. They caught us two times on giveaways and we gave the ball away too many times. We were absolutely awful with the ball at our feet and in all aspects of the game today."
