Siege win first game
February 11, 2006 - National Women's Basketball League (NWBL)
San Diego Siege News Release
Saturday was a night of firsts for the 2006 National Women's Basketball League.
Playing in their first home game in their first season of existence, the San Francisco Legacy missed a wide open lay up with seconds remaining to push their inaugural game against the expansion San Diego Siege into overtime.
And then the team from Southern California playing their first game in franchise history took over.
The Siege went back to the basics to win their first game, securing the game in the waning minutes by rallying behind guard Natalie Nakase's 6-6 shooting from the charity stripe.
The Siege clung to a 37-36 lead at halftime and proved to be the more sound team down the stretch. Siege guard and USC star Jessica Cheeks led all scorers with 19 points while her WNBA-veteran teammate Tynesha Lewis scored 16. Anisha Carter led the Legacy with 18 points, with 16 coming from backcourt mate Toni Russell.
The San Diego Siege open their 2006 Inaugural Season with three straight road games, including Sunday night's match up against the San Jose Spiders and Tuesday's battle against the 2005 NWBL Champion, Colorado Chill.
The Siege return home for their Saturday, February 18th home opener against the San Jose Spiders at San Diego City College's brand new Harry West Arena.
