Sidewinders Walk Off On Portland 6-5

Tucson, AZ - Jesus Merchan's RBI single in extra innings gave Tucson a 6-5 walk off win over Portland on Friday night.

With the game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the 10th, Jeff Salazar drew a leadoff walk to begin the frame. A passed ball advance him to second and he stole third on the next pitch. Portland intentionally walked the next two batters to get the bases loaded. Jesus Merchan came up and hit a single to center on the first pitch to give the Sidewinders the series opening win.

Outside of the one run in the 10th inning, all of Tucson's runs came in the first three innings. The Sidewinders took the early lead with two runs in the first inning off of two RBI singles by Jeff Salazar and Jesus Merchan.

Portland put one run up in the second inning with a Matt Antonelli line drive single to center scoring Brett Dowdy from third. The Sidewinders extended their lead 4-1 in the second inning off a two run homerun by Tim Raines, Jr., which was his 12th of the season.

Tucson's Jamie D'Antona hit a solo shot in the third to make the score 5-1. Portland kept cutting into the lead, scoring two in the fourth inning from a Peter Ciofrone double. They added one in the sixth inning off Paul McAnulty RBI single and the Beavers eventually tied the game 5-5 it in the seventh when Colt Morton hit a solo shot to left.

The Sidewinders will face the Portland Beavers in the second game of their four game series starting at 7:00 PM on Saturday night. RHP Matt Torra (1-2, 6.08) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Left-hander Cesar Ramos (7-7, 6.55) will start for the Sounds. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:55 p.m.
