Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Salt Lake City, UT - Billy Buckner fired seven shutout innings and Tim Raines, Jr. and Donnie Kelly homered as the Sidewinders shut out the Salt Lake Bees 6-0 on Saturday night. The shutout is Tucson's second of the season and their first since April 27th.
Buckner allowed just four hits and one walk. He struck out five and has now thrown 15 consecutive scoreless innings. Jason Urquidez and Reid Mahon each threw a scoreless frame to complete the shutout.
Buckner got early run support as Raines hit the second pitch of the game from Salt Lake starter Nick Green over the wall in right for his eighth home run of the season. Green (4-4) allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits in 5.1 innings.
The Sidewinders broke the game open in the fifth. A single by Matt Morgan, a double by Raines and a walk to Trent Oeltjen loaded the bases and when Freddy Sandoval misplayed Jamie D'Antona's grounder to third, two runs scored to give Tucson a 3-0 lead. Jesus Merchan followed Josh Whitesell's ground ball to second with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0, and Kelly homered for the second straight game to give Tucson a 6-0 edge.
The Bees had just two runners reach second all night and did not have a man past first after the fifth.
The Sidewinders and Bees wrap up their three game series on Sunday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field. Left-hander Evan MacLane (4-6, 5.03) starts for Tucson against right-hander Shane Loux (10-4, 4.29) for Salt Lake. First pitch is at 1:05 Tucson time. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 12:55.
