Giants Outfielder Roberts To Join Grizzlies On Monday

FRESNO, CA - San Francisco Giants' outfielder Dave Roberts will begin a rehab assignment with the Fresno Grizzlies on Monday, July 7th at Chukchansi Park when the Grizzlies open a four-game series with the Portland Beavers. The 2008 Opening Day left-fielder in San Francisco, Roberts has been recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery performed on April 12th.

The 36-year old Roberts was signed by the Giants as a free agent in December of 2006 after two seasons in the San Diego Padres organization. In 114 games with the Giants in 2007 the veteran outfielder batted .260 with 17 doubles, 61 runs scored, and 31 stolen bases.

Roberts broke camp as the starting left fielder for San Francisco this spring, and played there on Opening Day against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Unfortunately he played in just six games before having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and also a condition known as chondromalacia, commonly known as "runner's knee" -- a degenerative condition of the cartilage surface in the back of the kneecap.

The trip to the disabled list was Roberts' second in two seasons with the Giants as he missed a month last year after undergoing surgery in May to remove bone spurs from his left elbow. After four weeks of recovery last year, the outfielder appeared in a Fresno uniform in June, going 1-for-7 at the plate in two games with the Grizzlies. Those games were both played on the road at Las Vegas' Cashman Field, so Monday will be Roberts' first action at Chukchansi Park.

Roberts is the fifth San Francisco Giant to rehab with Fresno in 2008, joining pitchers Vinnie Chulk, Erick Threets, and Kevin Correia, and shortstop Omar Vizquel who appeared in two games at Chukchansi Park in early May.

The Grizzlies continue the Highway-99 Showdown Series with the Sacramento River Cats on Saturday and Sunday at Chukchansi Park. The team will welcome Dave Roberts, and the Portland Beavers, to Fresno on Monday, July 7, with game time set for 7:05.
