Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON- Justin Shugg scored the game winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in the third period to get the Majors past the Petes 4-3 this afternoon. With the victory the Majors improve to 20-2-0-1 on the season. The Majors also became the first team in the OHL to reach 20 wins this season.

The Majors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and a seesaw battle ensued for the remainder of the game with Mississauga eventually emerging as the victors. At 2:55 of the first period Corey Bureau beat Petes netminder Bryce O'Hagan high on the glove side to make it 1-0 for the Majors. Mississauga continued to outplay the Petes in the early part as Peterborough did not register their first shot on goal until eight minutes into the period. Jordan Mayer put the Majors ahead 2-0 with his seventh goal of the season at 11:32. Brett Flemming raced into the Petes zone and passed to Justin Shugg who was waiting behind the Peterborough net. Shugg then found Mayer all alone in front of the Petes goal and Mayer beat O'Hagan high glove side. That ended the scoring for the first period and the Majors took the 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Jack Walchessen pulled the Petes to within one at 13:12 of the second as his shot from the side of the Majors goal just got past Anthony Peters who was playing tight to the short side. Rob Flick restored the two goal lead for the Majors just over a minute later on the power play after making a move and beating O'Hagan with a backhander to make it 3-1. Matt Puempel responded for the Petes with three seconds remaining in the second period after his wrister from the faceoff circle beat Peters to cut it to 3-2 for the Majors and that's how it stayed after forty minutes.

The Petes tied the game three minutes into the third period after Adrian Robertson kept the puck in the Majors zone and fired at goal. After a couple bounces the went to Puempel who fired it past Peters to make it 3-3. The Petes had two chances to take the lead but the first opportunity fired off the post and the second was cleared by Anthony Peters to keep the game deadlocked at 3-3. Dylan DeMelo made a solid play in the Majors zone and fought off two Peterborough forwards and sent a lead pass to Justin Shugg. Shugg took the pass and skated into the Peterborough zone and fired past O'Hagan to give the Majors the lead and that would prove to be decisive as the Majors held on to win it 4-3. Anthony Peters made 21 saves to earn the win for Mississauga, while Bryce O'Hagan stopped 30 shots in a losing effort for the Petes.
