Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (23-33) defeated the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (32-24) by a 9-6 score in 10 innings in the first game of the five-game series at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Jumbo Shrimp have won their last four games, all in comeback fashion, for the Southern League's longest active winning streak. Jacksonville is now 3-2 in extra-inning games in 2019.

Jumbo Shrimp right-handed relief pitcher Tyler Stevens (1-0) earned the win by working scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth. Pensacola right-handed relief pitcher Cody Stashak (2-3) took the loss by allowing Jacksonville's go-ahead runs in the top of the tenth inning. Jacksonville left-handed relief pitcher Dylan Lee earned his club-high sixth save of the year by recording the final outs in the bottom of the tenth.

Jacksonville struck first in the top of the third, as Brian Miller delivered a two-out two-RBI triple down the right field line to put the Shrimp in front 2-0. In the top of the fourth, Stone Garrett smashed a solo home run to left field to grow Jacksonville's lead to 3-0.

After Guzman's first five innings were scoreless, the Wahoos stormed back in the bottom of the sixth. Alex Kiriloff got Pensacola on the board with an RBI single to make it a 3-1 game. The next hitter Jaylin Davis blasted a three-run home run to left that put the Blue Wahoos in front 4-3. Pensacola carried that 4-3 lead to the top of the ninth inning with left-hander Sam Clay on the mound. Anfernee Seymour tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI single to force extra innings.

In the top of the tenth, Stone Garrett hit a ground ball to third that was misplayed by third baseman Joe Cronin to score Twine to give Jacksonville a 5-4 lead. Jacksonville added to its advantage with an RBI double by J.C. Millan to grow the lead to 6-4. Pensacola shortstop Jordan Gore replaced Stashak on the mound, and promptly allowed an RIB single to Corey Bird, then a two-run double to Seymour to grow the lead to 9-4.

In the bottom of the tenth, Travis Blankenhorn hit a two-run home run to cut Jacksonville's lead to 9-6, which would be the final.

Pensacola left-handed starting pitcher Bryan Sammons pitched five innings allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts, and left his start with the Wahoos trailing 3-0. Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher Jorge Guzman had a no decision, allowing four runs (all earned) on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in his five and two-thirds innings of work, and he left with Jacksonville trailing 4-3.

The Jumbo Shrimp and the Blue Wahoos will continue their series with the second game of the five-game series on Monday night at 7:35 p.m. eastern. Right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet (3-3, 2.33 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Pensacola left-handed pitcher Charlie Barnes (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
