Showboats ranked 11th in ABA

San Antonio, Tx 11-20-08 - The ABA announced the power rankings within the league early this week and the South Texas Showboats have become number 11 from not even being ranked the week before. The Showboats are 3-0 in pre-season play and have outscored their 3 opponents by an average of 36 points. They hope to continue their winning streak in Houston this Saturday in their final pre-season game before they tip off off the season December 6th in San Antonio. "This is a great opportunity for us to be recognized by the league and it is up to us to keep our organization within the top teams in the league. This is going to be a fun and exciting season and we are pretty happy with the players we have put together here in San Antonio." said CEO/Head Coach Ben Mireles
The Showboats are an expansion team out of San Antonio, Texas and are the first minor league basketball team in 35 years to be formed since the San Antonio Spurs merged in the NBA in 1976. The San Antonio Spurs were formally known as the Dallas Chaparrals and became an ABA team in 1973 and played through 1976. The Spurs at that time merged into the NBA and has been the only professional basketball team in history to be formed in the city. Mireles says he formed this team in hopes of bringing affordable basketball at a professional level for familes to enjoy. "We are not here to compete with the San Antonio Spurs. They are the cream of the crop here in San Antonio so I know that this team is not going to be in competition with Champions of San Antonio. However, we too have strong hopes of bringing an ABA Championship to the city and become a championship caliber organization just as the Spurs, Silver Stars, Missions, Warriors, Rampage, etc."said Mireles. The Showboats name came from Mireles when he says that he used to be called a "Showboat" instead of a ball hog. "I just felt the name fit the legendary league and so that is why I called us the Showboats" said Mireles
The Showboats have a mission here in San Antonio and it's to bring affordable basketball, great talent, winning team, charitable voluntary work throughout the city, and to help with education and to mentor to the youth of San Antonio. They hope to begin the mentorship with a local high school here in San Antonio.
