CHL Central Hockey League

Shots from the Point for January 13, 2014

January 13, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

Three Things You Need to Know

1.) Half-Way Through- The CHL's unofficial midway point of the season is this week as the clubs will all be idle until Friday night. Quad City has played the fewest games at 31 and Tulsa has played the most games at 39. Rapid City (23-9-0) leads the way with Allen (21-10-3), Missouri (21-10-1) and Denver (18-10-6) also making up the top half of the clubs that would qualify for the post-season. Eight teams will make it to the playoffs and if things ended today, the Rush would play the Arizona Sundogs (14-18-1), the Americans would play the Brampton Beast (18-16-2), the Mavs would play the Quad City Mallards (16-8-7) and the Cutthroats would face the Tulsa Oilers (19-18-2). Although currently out of the playoffs, Wichita (12-17-4) and St. Charles (8-23-5) are both still within reach.

2.) Sundogs, Engelage Streaking- The Arizona Sundogs hit the midway point as the hottest team in the CHL with a four-game win streak. During their hot spell, the Sundogs have been unbelievable defensively allowing just three total goals. Andrew Engelage is pushing closer to CHL history with three straight shutouts and a 206:25 scoreless minute streak, fifth longest in league history. Engelage is roughly a half of a game away from the league record of 238:31 set in 2011-12 by Mark Guggenberger (with the Texas Brahmas at the time). Engelage will have a chance to reach the record on Friday night when Arizona hosts Allen, ironically, Guggenberger's current team.

3.) Allen Moving Up- Don't look now but the Allen Americans have slowly made their way back to familiar territory. The defending Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Champs and Bud Poile Governors' Cup Champs have been the best CHL club since mid-December going 9-2-1 in their last 12 games. The offense has been balanced with five players recording 11 points or more in their last 10 games. Defenseman Tyler Ludwig has scored seven goals in his last 10 games. In net, Mark Guggenberger is 4-1-0 in his last five decisions and Bryan Pitton is 3-1-1. Allen will be tested in their coming days facing the red-hot Arizona Sundogs on Friday and Saturday in Prescott Valley and on Monday in Allen for Martin Luther King Day.

By the Numbers

1000: The number of assists that Tulsa forward Todd Robinson has accumulated in his pro career. The veteran reached the milestone in Saturday's 7-2 victory over the Brampton Beast and had a goal and nine assists last week in the Oilers four-game week (Tulsa was 3-1 in those games). Robinson's hot play has taken him to the top spot in the league in scoring with 57 points (12-45=57).

One-Timers

-Denver's Garett Bembridge is leading the league averaging close to six shots on goal per game and his 27 strikes are the most in the CHL. His 202 shots on goal are 51 more than any other player.

-Rapid City defenseman Sean Erickson had just one assist in his first eight games but in his last 17 games has scored six goals with 19 assists. Erickson is tied for the lead among defensemen with 26 points (6-20&).

-After starting the season nearly unbeatable on home ice, the Quad City Mallards have now lost four straight home contests going 0-2-2 over that stretch. The Flock open the second half of the season in Wichita on Friday night.

-Tulsa goalie Shane Madolora has won each of his last three starts allowing just four goals over those three wins. Madolora leads the league with 1792:22 and 845 saves. His 17 wins on the season are third most in the league.

-Despite trailing 4-2 after one period, the Allen Americans scored three third period goals to beat the Tulsa Oilers 6-5 on Sunday. Allen has won seven of the 11 games versus Tulsa this season and the win marked the first time in 10 games this season that Allen has won when trialing heading into the final frame.

-After winning their first four games on their six-game road trip, the Brampton Beast dropped back-to-back decisions over the weekend losing twice in Tulsa. The Beast scored 21 times in their four wins but just four times in their two losses.

-Denver has needed extra time more than any other team this season going 3-2 in overtime and going 1-4 in shootouts.

-CHL-TV, powered by America ONE Sports, is back for a second season with monthly and season packages available as well as all games on a given night available for $8.00. Visit www.americaonesports.com for ordering information.
