Shots from the Point for December 3, 2012

December 3, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

Three Things You Need to Know

1.) November's Best- The Wichita Thunder ended the month of November with the league's highest point total (21) and a sparkling 10-2-1 record thus climbing the ranks to second in the league just three points behind the Allen Americans. Allen (8-2-1), along with Bloomington (8-5-1) and Denver (8-5-1) tied for second during the month with 17 points apiece. Fort Worth (7-5-1) finished with 15 points followed by a trio of teams with 13 points; Arizona (6-6-1), Quad City (5-6-3) and Rapid City (5-6-3). Missouri (4-7-1) and Tulsa (4-7-1) rounded out November's standings with nine points each.

2.) Injuries Hurting Mavs and Rush- Both the Missouri Mavericks (7-8-2) and Rapid City Rush (9-7-3) had high hopes heading into the season but both have been hard hit by injuries and unable to get any real momentum going. The Rush currently have six players on the injured reserve; Jordan Baker, Jared Brown, Winston Day Chief, Michael Couch, Mike Glaicar and Adam Chorneyko and the Mavericks have five players on the injured list; Trevor Kell, Colt King, Ryan Jardine, Jeff Pierce and Kellen Tochkin. Neither team has been able to muster a win streak longer than two games; both are in action on Tuesday with Missouri heading to Tulsa and Rapid City hosting Wichita.

3.) Rookies Rising to the Top- November was a great month for rookies in the CHL with a handful standing out. Goaltenders Aaron Dell from Allen and Kieran Millan from Denver really stood out with Dell going 5-1 with a 1.69 GAA and Millan posting a 5-2-1 record with a 1.80 GAA. A trio of forwards also rose to the top with Wichita's Gregor Hanson scoring six goals with seven assists, Bloomington's Tyler Gron scoring nine goals with nine assists and Quad City's Michael Stanziani scoring four goals with eight assists. The 50/50 Central CHL Rookie of the Month will be announced on Wednesday (Dec. 5).

By the Numbers

12: The number of shutouts in the CHL this season through the games of December 2. Last season at this time, there were only five shutouts in the league, showing an increase in goaltending talent this year. Fort Worth's Kristofer Westblom leads the league with two shutouts (no other player has more than one) and his came back-to-back last week blanking Quad City on Nov. 28 and Arizona on Nov. 30.

One-Timers

-Denver forward Brad Smyth is currently riding the longest active point streak in the CHL at six games. During his streak, the veteran has five goals and three assists. He was named the Oakley CHL Player of the Week on Monday. Smyth is tied for third in the CHL with 23 points on the season (11-12=23).

-Allen forward Scotty Howes notched a hat trick on Friday taking over the league's goal scoring lead with 13 scores. On the season, Howes has 23 points with 13 goals and 10 assists.

-The Quad City Mallards are last in the CHL with a 6.3% power play going just 4 for 64 on the season. The Flock have failed to convert on their last 26 power plays (spans seven games).

-Arizona's Adam Smyth is just five penalty minutes shy of becoming the 26th player to reach 1200 PIMs in his CHL career. Smyth is fifth in the league this season with 54 PIM's to go along with five assists.

-Tulsa Head Coach Bruce Ramsay won his 100th game with the team on Sunday against Arizona. Ramsay is 100-90-23 in his three-plus seasons with the Oilers. The 43-year-old is just three wins shy of 300 for his pro coaching career.

-The Denver Cutthroats are heading back to a place that abused them the last time through, Arizona. The Fish will play in Prescott Valley against the Sundogs where they lost three straight games between Nov. 7-10. After that losing slide, the Cutthroats caught fire and have gone 7-2-1 since.

-Be sure to catch all of the action on CHL-TV all season long.
