Kansas City Outlaws News Release
Shoot outs have been very good to the Kansas City Outlaws this year. During the recent four game road trip, the Outlaws went 3-1 with all 3 victories coming in shootouts. Tonight, the Quad City Mallards had the lucky nickel, and downed the Outlaws 2 goals to 1 in the shootout for the 4-3 final victory.
Outlaw veteran Jay Murphy started scoring for Kansas City, scoring on the power play at 9:16 of the first period. Jason Ruff and Joe Seroski got the assists.
Kansas City's Matthieu Descoteaux was back on the ice for the first time since sustaining broken foot in early January, and made his presence known in the first period. Disco was called for a pair of roughing penalties, at 3:44 and again 14:57 of the first frame. With Descoteaux in the box, the Mallards tied the game at 1-1, as Quad City's Mike Kompon beat Maxime Gingras for his 23rd goal of the season (Terry Hollinger, Joe Dusbabek). Kompon is the Mallards' leading scorer, and the goal gives him 59 points on the year.
When Les Borsheim was whistled for slashing with 1:23 remaining in the period, the Outlaws went on the power play and again made it count. The trio of Murphy, Ruff, and Seroski struck just 30 seconds later. Ruff and Murphy fed Seroski for Smokin' Joe's 29th goal of the year, and 13th power play goal. The first intermission arrived with Kansas City on top 2-1.
The power play paid off for the Outlaws in the second period. Kansas City enjoyed the 2 man advantage after penalties to Mallards Dave Stewart and Sergei Durdin at 13:23. Descoteaux scored at 14:38 (Ruff, Mark Lee), his 7th of the year. The Outlaws led, 3-1.
The Mallards still had a lot of quack in them, and bit back in the third period. Goals by A. J. MacLean at 5:13 (Greg Barber) and Patrick Nadeau at 7:43 (Barber, Hollinger) tied the match at 3-3. When regulation ended, the score remained knotted at 3 each.
The Outlaws have dominated in shootout situations this year. Coming into tonight, the Outlaws were 9-3 in shootout situations for the season, and Maxime The Dream Gingras was an outstanding 7-2. Victory was in the air.
The shootout began with Gingras stuffing Patrick Nadeau, followed by a Jason Ruff tally. The Outlaws led the shootout 1-0. Neither Quad City's Greg Barber nor Jay Murphy could manage a goal in the second round, but Mallard Jason Deskins slipped the puck past Gingras in the third to tie things at 1-1. After a scoreless fourth round, Quad City's Troy Smith scored to give the Mallards a 1 goal lead. Jimmy Callahan couldn't convert for the Outlaws, and Quad City picked up the shootout victory. The official score- 4-3.
Maxime The Dream Gingras, named UHL Goaltender of the Week for the week past, continued to sparkle in goal. Gingras kicked away an amazing 44 of 47 shots during regulation as Kansas City was outshot 47 to 19.
