Detroit Shock News Release
SHOCK STILL PERFECT AFTER COME FROM BEHIND WIN
On Tuesday, May 24, the Detroit Shock faced off against the San Antonio Silver Stars. The Shock led at halftime, but the Silver Stars took a nine-point lead in the second half. Detroit had 11 turnovers in the first 11 minutes and missed nine of 14 shots from the field. Detroit continued to trail and faced a 63-54 deficit with only 4:27 left in the game. However, determined to avoid their first loss, the Shock closed the game with a 20-2 run. Forward Deanna Nolan started the run with a lay-up and Andrea Stinson and Kara Braxton combined for 12 points in the final minutes. Stinson also hit two key three-pointers to help seal the victory. With the win, the Shock improve their record to 3-0, the best start in franchise history.
NEWLY ACQUIRED STINSON SHOWS STAYING POWER
Andrea Stinson's veteran leadership during last Tuesday's game against the Silver Stars was a key factor in the victory. The game marked Stinson's 257th consecutive game. Stinson holds the record for most consecutive games in the history of the WNBA. At 37, Stinson is the second oldest player in the league. Before this season, Stinson also held the WNBA record for most consecutive games started at 254. Stinson is one of 11 players in the league still remaining from the WNBA's inaugural season, and is the third leading scorer in the history of the league. In three games this season, Stinson is averaging 3.3 points and 1.0 rebound in 4.0 minutes.
RUTH RILEY AUTHORS CHILDREN'S BOOK
Detroit Shock All-Star center Ruth Riley can now add author to her impressive list of accomplishments. Riley, along with Community Relations staff member Paul Hickey wrote "The Spirit of Basketball." The book teaches the lesson that the language and spirit of the sport of basketball is the same all over the world. Riley, along with her Shock teammates, believes that it is an honor to be a role model in the community and is committed to the fans, the community, the organization, and her teammates. "Working with Paul Hickey (co-author) and Chris Hiller (illustrator) was great. We really came together as a team and spent a lot of hours developing the story and the characters. We wanted to make sure the message was the right one for kids: that basketball is the same no matter where you live or what language you speak," Riley said. The first 3,000 fans to arrive at the Palace before Friday's game against the New York Liberty will receive a copy of the book. The giveaway is the largest promotional distribution featuring a player-authored book in league history.
