Shock Top Coaches Poll for Record 15th Week
June 24, 2009 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - The Spokane Shock have maintained the No. 1 ranking of the Weekly Coaches Poll for a record 15th straight week, the arenafootball2 (af2) league office announced today. Spokane collected 381 points of the possible 384 and 21-of-25 first place votes coming off the club's 69-22 home win in Week 13 over division and in-state rival Tri-Cities. The Shock, who have won all 11 of their games this season, will be hosting No. 11 Oklahoma City next week. Spokane's current 15-week stay at the top is the longest run at No. 1, breaking the record of 14 weeks previously set by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2007.
Tulsa (11-1, 354 points, 2 first place votes) remained at No. 2 after their 66-54 road victory at Green Bay. The Talons have won 10 straight games. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (10-2, 334 points, 1 first place vote) remained at No. 3 this week after their 38-point home victory over Central Valley, 58-20. Tennessee Valley moved up to No. 4 after defeating Florida, 54-29. Boise (10-2, 292 points) rounds out the Top-5 this week, dropping one place after a narrow 57-54 home win against Stockton. This is the third straight week the Burn have been in the top five.
Each week during the season af2 coaches will vote for the Top 16 teams in the league by ranking them one through 16 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 16 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 16th would receive one point. Total points will determine the Top 16 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes will be ranked higher. The af2 Coaches Poll will be announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification. The complete Top 16 is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.
