Shock tame SaberCats in 90 - 63 victory

SAN JOSE, CA - The Spokane Shock (8-6) won in convincing fashion against the San Jose SaberCats (9-6) at HP Pavillion in a Week 16 AFL West Division match-up in front of 9,062 fans by a final score of 90-63.

The game opened with a shaky start from both teams as Spokane's opening pass deflected off the wall into the hands of the San Jose defense. On San Jose's following possession, a fumbled snap went to the turf and was recovered by Shock DT Chris Tucker that would awaken the Shock offense and lead to a one play TD drive by Spokane on a pass from QB Kyle Rowley to WR Adron Tennell . After yet another fumble by San Jose and recovery by the Spokane defense on the following drive, the Shock quickly went on to score on a second TD reception by Adron Tennell to give Spokane a two score lead. The first quarter would end with Spokane leading 21-7.

Second quarter action would resume with a short TD run by San Jose, but be answered with four unanswered touchdowns by Spokane as Kyle Rowley would connect with Adron Tennell (third of the game), Rod Harper twice, and Steven Black for scores. Paul Stephens came up with an interception on the goal line to support the Shock offense as they went on to post a 28-point second quarter; closing the first half with Spokane leading 49 to 20.

The third quarter would open in similar fashion as the start of the game with an interception by Shock DB Paul Stephens (second of the game) on the SaberCats opening drive of the half. Spokane's following possession would lead to yet another TD by WR Adron Tennell as Shock QB Kyle Rowley would fumble the snap, recover, and throw a great jump ball in the corner of the end zone. Third quarter action would close with Spokane leading 69-36.

The fourth and final quarter of play would show back and forth scoring by each team as Kyle Rowley would break the single game AFL record with 12 TD passes. Spokane would go on to post a total of 90 points in the contest, the most every scored against the San Jose SaberCats (record previously held by Cleveland with 82 points on June 25th, 2011).

Kyle Rowley completed 30 of 37 attempts for 392 yards, 12 TDs and 1 interception. Adron Tennell led the Shock receiving effort, bringing in 13 receptions for 164 yards and 5 TDs. Rod Haper added 9 receptions for 119 yards and 4 TDs as Jeffrey Soloman brought in 5 receptions for 74 yards and 2 TDs. Paul Stevens came up with 2 INTs on the night and was supported by five forced fumbles and recoveries by the Shock defense.

Mark Grieb completed 25 of 40 attempts for 356 yards with 5 TDs and 2 INTs. Mark Lewis carried the ball 6 times for 21 yards and 2 TDs. The SaberCat's air attack was led by Fred Williams with 7 receptions and 102 yards and 3 TDs. Samora Goodson supported with 7 receptions for 142 yards and 1 TD as well.

Next week the Spokane Shock host the Arizona Rattlers on Friday, June 29th with an 8pm kickoff at Spokane Arena.
