The Shock also released former University of Washington WR Sonny Shackelford, who was picked up by the Mahoning Valley Thunder.

Powers, 6-4 233, finished his collegiate career at Indiana University in 2007. After redshirting his freshman year, Powers went on to play in 28 games for the Hoosiers and accounted for 28 touchdowns (rushing and passing). As a sophomore, Powers set an single season school record with 22 passing touchdowns. The previous record, 17, was set by Antwaan Randle El in 1999. In addition to 100 career rushing yards, Powers also contributed 2,789 passing yards as a Hoosier.

According to af2 League President Jerry Kurz, whose son played with Powers at Indiana, he is the ultimate "team player."

"Blake is a team player. He is the prototypical pro-style quarterback," Kurz said. "His Dad was a big strong tight end at Indiana and Blake has the arm strength that is tremendous for our league."

Powers said that he confided in Kurz and the opportunity to play in Spokane earned his stamp of approval.

"I just felt like it was a good opportunity to play in Spokane and to trust Mr.Kurz's word," Powers explained. "I realize nothing will be handed to you. No matter what sport you are playing, you have to earn your position. I'm just going to come in and do the best that I can."

The Spokane Shock will open the 2009 season at the Spokane Arena on Spokane Tribe Field April 3rd. Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 509 242 7462.
