Spokane Shock News Release
The Spokane Shock dropped a heart-breaker Saturday night in Kansas City, losing to the Command 42-45. For Kansas City, it is the second week in a row they have won the game on the final play.
After Spokane's defense came up with a key stop in the fourth quarter the Shock offense took to the field down by eight points. Rookie QB Casey Hansen led Spokane's offense on a 10 play, 34-yard drive that was capped off by a three yard touchdown pass to WR Emery Sammons. For Sammons, who ended the game with four receptions for 29 yards, it was his second touchdown of the game.
Head Coach Rob Keefe and Offensive Coordinator Andy Olson elected to go for the two-point conversion to tie the game. Hansen dropped back to pass and fired a bullet into WR Raul Vijil to convert the two point conversion and tie the game with just over four minutes left in the game.
Kansas City's final drive of the game started on the six yard line. Six plays later, Command QB JJ Raterink put his team in place to attempt the game-winning field goal. Command K Brian Umstead, who missed a 21-yard field goal earlier in the game, took to the field and booted the 23-yard field goal through the uprights to give Kansas City its fourth win of the season.
Spokane started off the game with a quick score thanks to the Shock defense. As Raterink dropped back to pass, he lost control of the football and it fell into the hands of Shock LB Antwan Marsh who strolled into the endzone to give Spokane the early 7-0 lead.
Kansas City quickly fired back, returning the ensuing kickoff 50-yards to tie the game 7-7. The Command's offense scored 24 more points while its defense limited Spokane to 14 first half points.
Hansen finished the game with four touchdowns and 159 passing yards. WR Greg Orton led Spokane's receiving corps with six receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown. KR Terrance Sanders also got into the endzone returning a Kansas City kickoff 54 yards for this third touchdown of the season.
Spokane has a bye next week and will return to action on June 10th when they host the Philadelphia Soul for a nationally televised game on the NFL Network. Tickets are still available for the game and can be purchased by contacting TicketsWest.
