STOCKTON, CA: It's been said that there's no place like home, but the Spokane Shock are also comfortable on the road as they defeated the Stockton Lightning 65-47 Saturday night. With the win tonight, the Shock became just the fourth team in league history to have a perfect road record at 8-0.
DB Sergio Gilliam also found a place for himself in the af2 record book, breaking the league record for most interceptions in a season with 16. Gilliam came up with the interception mid-way through the first quarter.
"It was a relief to get out of the way early - more importantly though, we got the win," Gilliam explained after the game. "I wish I could have gotten it at home in Spokane but I'll take it."
Gilliam was not going to be outdone by his fellow DB Roshawn Marshall who had two interceptions tonight and was selected as the ADT Defensive Player of the Game.
The Shock's defense seemed to rattle Lightning QB Andy Collins all night as he threw for a season-low 142 passing yards with three interceptions.
Shock QB Nick Davila, who was selected as the Offensive Player of the Game, put on a show for the nearly 40 friends and family members in attendance for the California-native. Davila accounted for six touchdowns and 269 passing yards while completing 56% of his pass attempts.
Although it was a road game for his new teammates WR and Sacramento-native Etu Molden was right at home playing in Stockton. Molden, in just his first game as a member of the Shock, had nine receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown.
"It felt real good just to get out there and battle with my teammates and shed some blood on the field with them," Molden said. "We came out a little sluggish but at halftime we fixed those mistakes and got another W."
WR Andy Olson led the team with 11 receptions, two touchdowns and 214 all-purpose yards.
The Shock return home next week for the final two games of the regular season against the Quad City Steamwheelers and the Boise Burn, respectively. Tickets can be purchased by contacting TicketsWest.
NOTES: BEAR HAND - FB Katon Bethay, nicknamed the Polar Bear, earned the Cutter's Catch of the Game for the first time in his career. Bethay's one-handed 12-yard touchdown grab in the first quarter earned him the honor. SAFETY FIRST - DL Harrison Nikolao recorded an eight-yard sack for his first safety of the season.
