Coyotes Run Past Copperheads

Houston, TX - The Central Valley Coyotes scored TDs on 11 of 12 possessions while coasting to a 72-34 victory over the Texas Copperheads. Central Valley improved their record to 8-6 while Texas fell to 2-12.

Coyotes QB Clay Groefsema set the tone early when he found Damian Walker with a 20 yard scoring pass. On the night Groefsema accounted for 8 TD passes to 5 different receivers, completing 19 of 23 passes for 254 yards and no interceptions. Groefsema lead the Coyotes to TDs on 9 of the 9 possessions he played and was recognized as the "Schutt Offensive Player of the Game".

Texas answered Groefsema's first TD pass when Copperheads QB Stephen Wasil found Tim Riley with a 35 yard TD strike. Groefsema responded with a 4 yard TD pass to Jason Barnes to put Central Valley ahead to stay at 13-7.

Central Valley closed out 1st quarter scoring as Groefsema and Barnes connected again, this time on a 32 yard pass that put the Coyotes ahead 19-7.

Central Valley lead at halftime 46-21 after the Coyotes and Copperheads combined for 41 2nd quarter points. During the quarter Groefsema found Jomo Wilson with scoring passes of 15, 35 and 17 yards. Groefsema also combined with Tonae Martin for a 10 yard score. Texas scored on Stephen Wasil TD passes to Ervin Dickerson (6 yards) and Gabriel Hatchett (4 yards).

Central Valley opened third quarter scoring as Groefsema found TE Sean Finnerty for 7 yards. Texas responded as Wasil found Dickerson for an 11 yard score.

Central Valley then turned to their ground game as FB Damian Walker busted through the line for 29 yards but fumbled as he was being brought down near the goal line. Central Valley's Tonae Martin recovered the ball in the end zone to put the Coyotes ahead 58-27.

Texas' Armar Watson scored the first TD of the 4th quarter on a 4 yard run. Central Valley scored the final two TDs of the game as Coyotes back up QB Joe Ayoob connected with Ira Watley III for 18 yards and Jomo Wilson rushed for a 22 yard score.

With the loss, the Copperheads have completed their 2008 home schedule but still have two road games remaining on their schedule. Next week Texas travels to Corpus Christi for a July 20 contest with the Sharks. Kickoff at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi is scheduled for 3pm.
