Spokane Shock News Release

SPOKANE, WA (January 5, 2015) - The Spokane Shock have been assigned Arvell Nelson to the 2015 roster.

Nelson (6-5, 225, Texas Southern) joins the Shock for his third season as a member of the AFL after spending the 2014 season with the Pittsburgh Power. Nelson began his AFL career with the Spokane Shock in 2013 where his unique athletic abilities and "iron man" skills were first introduced as he saw time at quarterback, receiver, jack linebacker and on special teams.

"There are very few athletes in the AFL or at any level who possesses the range of skills like Arvell does," said Shock head coach Andy Olson. "His ability to play at multiple positions at a high level is huge with the size of our rosters and he showed us back in 2013 that he has the ability to be a great quarterback in this league."

During 2014 in Pittsburgh, Nelson appeared in 18 games, starting 14 of those contests at jack linebacker where he recorded 60 total tackles, four fumble recoveries, and five interceptions on the season. He saw limited action at the quarterback position playing back up to Tommy Grady, completing 7 of 13 attempts for 67 yards and a touchdown while adding 11 rushing attempts for 42 yards and two scores on the season.

As a rookie with the Shock in 2013 Nelson and back up to AFL MVP quarterback Erik Meyer, Nelson appeared in 17 games completing 16 of 20 pass attempts for 162 yards and five touchdowns while adding four scores on the ground. As a receiver Nelson registered 9 receptions for 67 yards and six touchdowns. He also contributed at jack linebacker and on special teams throughout the season.

Nelson finished his collegiate career at Texas Southern University in Houston, TX after transferring from the University of Iowa. During his two seasons with the Tigers, Nelson recorded 4,176 passing yards and passed for 21 touchdowns while adding 854 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground. Nelson is a native of Cleveland, OH where he attended Glenville High School.

The Shock's 2015 AFL regular season will officially kick off on Saturday, March 28, 2015 against the ArenaBowl champion Arizona Rattlers in Phoenix, AZ. Spokane's first home game will come on Saturday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m. PT at Spokane Veteran's Memorial Arena against the Philadelphia Soul. To view the Shock's 2015 schedule (PDF).
