
Shepard's start spoiled, Bears lose 7-4

NEWARK, NJ - September 7, 2006 - Newark Bears starter David Shepard received a no decision after allowing two runs on five hits in six innings, as the Bears lost 7-4 Thursday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Designated hitter Will Pennyfeather got the Bears on the board in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single, and after sacrifice fly outs by Ducks center-fielder Mel Stocker and third baseman Erick Almonte put the Ducks on top 2-1 in the top of the sixth, Pennyfeather tied the game at two in the bottom half of the inning with his 13th home run of the season.
The Ducks took the lead for good when left-fielder Ray Navarrete (1) hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh off Bears reliever Domingo Acosta. Acosta (7-6) took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits in one inning pitched.
Pennyfeather led the Bears offense going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI, while catcher Victor Valencia finished 2-for-4 with his 14th home run of the season, a two-run blast over the batters eye in centerfield in the bottom of the ninth to cut the lead to 7-4. Ducks shortstop Carlos Hernandez went 3-for-4 with three singles, and an RBI.
Colin Young (2-0) picked up the victory after allowing one run on two hits in one inning pitched, striking out one.
The Bears will begin a three-game series against the Bridgeport Bluefish Friday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. Gates open at 5:35 pm to Caribbean Night featuring a Piggy Bank Giveaway to the first 1,500 fans in attendance, and a post-game fireworks spectacular presented by Garden State Fireworks. All fans will have the opportunity to win a trip for two to a Caribbean destination courtesy of Smart Travel Anywhere. In addition Caribbean Steel Beat will perform pre-game, and Edgar Santana, a rising Junior Welterweight boxer, will make a special appearance.
