MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Mississippi RiverKings mascot, Sheldon the Turtle, was at the first annual Books and BBQ Saturday, June 6 at the Agricenter in Memphis to promote literacy in the Mid-South and to share information about the RiverKings Readers program.

Sheldon interacted with the kids during the day and passed out bookmarks, workbooks and information about the RiverKings Readers program. He was also an attentive listener during a small reading circle when several volunteers read to the children.

"Having Sheldon there added interactions in a creative fun way in our efforts to further our mission in promoting literacy," said Angela Cole, creator of Books & BBQ. "He was truly a much appreciated addition to the event, and last but not least - he has some fabulous dancing skills!"

In its first year the RiverKings Readers program had over 8,000 participants in local schools and it helped facilitate over 160,000 hours of reading. For more information on the RiverKings Readers program, or to sign up your classroom or school, visit riverkings.com/RKReaders.
