Sharks Swept in Doubleheader

June 9, 2019 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

Morehead City, NC-The Wilmington Sharks dropped the completion of a suspended game from Friday 6-2 to the Morehead City Marlins and then dropped the seven inning second game 3-1 at O'Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium Sunday night. The losses dropped the Sharks to 3-6 on the season.

Game one picked up in the third inning with the Sharks already trailing 4-0. Ethan Meece came on to begin the third inning on the mound for the Sharks. He allowed only one run off four hits and struck out three in four innings of work. Cameron Reeves pitched another two innings of relief work in the seventh and eighth and struck out three to keep the Sharks within striking distance but the four-run deficit that the Sharks began the day with was too much to overcome.

The Marlins jumped on the Sharks early in game two scoring a run in each of the first three innings knocking Sharks starter Noah Takac out of the game. The Sharks bullpen combined for six strikeouts in the next three innings to once again keep the game close.

Morehead city starter Ryan Loutos struck out eight Shark hitters and gave up only one hit in five shutout innings of work. Cal Hehnke then struck out the side in the sixth before Kenny Wells recorded three more strikeouts in the seventh to record the save for the Marlins.

In each game, the Sharks got on the scoreboard for the first time in the final inning to avoid the shutout.

The Sharks will return to Buck Hardee Field Monday night against the Fayetteville SwampDogs. It is Jaws-N-Paws Night where fans can bring their dogs to the ballpark for a night of baseball and fun. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM with the gates opening at 6:00PM.
