Sharks Sign Experienced Right-Handed Reliever

February 15, 2012 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Martha's Vineyard Sharks News Release

Andrew Boyce is a big (6'2", 200 lbs.) right-handed pitcher from Avon, CT and attends the College of the Holy Cross in his junior year. Andrew will be the second oldest player on the Sharks in its current composition. He enjoyed an excellent season at Holy Cross last year appearing in 22 games with an ERA of 3.41, which matched his 34.1 innings pitched with 27 Ks. Andrew scorched the NY Collegiate Baseball League this past summer pitching 18.2 innings with a stellar ERA of 1.45 in 18.1 innings with 22 Ks. Andrew sat down and answered questions relating to his mores on pitching.

Give me a breakdown of your pitches; your primary pitch and secondary pitches.

I utilize three pitches, a fastball, curveball and changeup with at equal proficiency.

Do you rely more on location, movement or both.

I definitely rely on location more than movement. I am around the strike zone with all three of my pitches.

Did you start last season or were you used primarily in relief?

Last summer I was primarily a reliever.

Do you anticipate pitching in relief or starting this season?

I expect to be used in both roles.

What made you decide on Holy Cross?

I was initially recruited to play hockey at Holy Cross, but in the summer before college I realized that hockey was not going to work out as they recruited another goalie with a late commitment. I decided to try out for the baseball team as a walk on and made the team. I subsequently earned a four year scholarship.

Last summer you pitched in the NY Collegiate Baseball League. How did you find the competition compared to your college schedule?

Last summer in the NYCBL I found the competition to be weaker than the competition that I faced at Holy Cross. There were some good teams and exceptions, but in general, the overall quota at college level, talent-wise, was much higher.

Did you work on anything in particular last summer as far as pitching is concerned, such as your secondary pitches?

Absolutely, last summer was a huge summer for me. I made some major changes to my motion and to my work ethic, which led to a 5-6 mph increase in my fastball, and a more consistent arm slot for my off-speed pitches.

Have you ever been to Martha's Vineyard?

Nope, never, but I can't wait.

What is your goal pitching in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League this upcoming summer?

My goal this summer is to not give a single run.

Are you ready for the minor-league like traveling when you play for the Sharks? Charter boat rides back to the Vineyard at 1:00 and 2:00 AM in the moonlight?

Absolutely, that sort of lifestyle is my dream.
