The bats were alive early and often for the Sharks and Marlins tonight at the Shark Tank. Wilmington (14-24, 7-6) outlasted visiting Morehead City (26-11, 6-6) 9-8 to regain the second half division lead.
The Marlins scored first against Sharks starter Dylan Gibeau (1-4). Morehead City scored twice with a leadoff base hit, two walks, a hit batter and a sacrifice fly.
Wilmington answered immediately before Mason Duke could record an out. Noah Liles walked and his UNCW teammate Doug Angeli followed with a double to left center. Then, Mason Streater crushed his second homer of the summer to put the Sharks on top 3-2.
The Sharks added another in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Doug Angeli picked up his second base knock of the night to score Wil Hoyle.
In the third, Will Johnson knotted the affair back at 4. Morehead City's designated hitter crushed a two-run shot to center with two outs in the inning. The Marlins scored again in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Sharks scored three times with two outs. Ward Coleman double to left, followed by a walk to Ayden Karraker. Then an error and back-to-back RBI singles put the Sharks on top 7-5.
The Sharks added two more in the sixth inning, again with two outs. After Doug Angeli was picked off at first, three straight singles by Mason Streater, Paxton Wallace and Ward Coleman brought home two runs with the help of two more Morehead City errors. In total, the Sharks scored six runs with two outs.
The Marlins added three runs in the eighth to come within one heading to the ninth.
With a 9-8 lead, Keith Gabrielson (5) struck out two and walked one to shut the door for the Sharks.
Dylan Gibeau earned the win, while Dawson Moser (3-1) lost and Keith Gabrielson recorded his second save of the week.
