EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamer dropped game two of the East Division Championship series to the Wilmington Sharks by a score of 13-3 on Monday night. Edenton (3-2, 43-17) allowed the most runs it has in a game all season, while Wilmington (3-2, 32-26) posted the most hits by a visiting team at Historic Hicks Field this summer.
Trevor Houck took the loss for the Clams. Houck (0-1) lasted 5.2 innings while allowing four earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Andrew Locklear grabbed the win for Wilmington. Locklear (1-0) gave up one earned run on six hits while walking two batters and fanning three.
The Steamers got off to a good start with a run in the bottom of the second. Nick Maguire stepped to the dish with one out and smashed a ball over the scoreboard in right field to give Edenton a 1-0 advantage.
The Sharks responded with two runs in the fourth. Alex Destino and Kyle Nowlin both knocked one-out singles, and after a Matt Whatley strikeout, Sam Foy and Andy Austin followed with singles of their own to give Wilmington a 2-1 lead.
Destino kept the ball rolling for the Sharks in the sixth with a leadoff double. Two batters later, Foy cracked his second RBI single to score Destino. Joseph Roberts and Austin added two more singles to plate another run and extend the Shark lead to 4-1.
Wilmington broke the game open in the eighth with five runs. Already up 5-1, the Sharks put their first three batters on base. Nick Rotola stepped up as the fourth hitter and cleared the bases with a double. Brett Smith followed with an infield single, and a throwing error by shortstop Evan Rogers allowed Rotola to score and Smith to advance to second. Three batters later, Whatley knocked a double to polish off the inning and put the Sharks up 10-1.
Edenton peppered in a run in both the eighth and ninth innings, but a three-run ninth for Wilmington finished the game with a score of 13-3.
The Edenton Steamers host a winner-take-all game three of the East Division Championship series at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night. For more information about the Petitt Cup Playoffs fans can call (252) 482-4080 or visit edentonsteamers.com.
