Wilmington Sharks News Release
Wilmington, North Carolina-The Wilmington Sharks did just enough in a 3-2 pitcher's duel win over the Holly Springs Salamanders Saturday night at Buck Hardee Field. The victory improved the Sharks to 2-1 in the second half of play.
Garrett McDaniels became the second Sharks starting pitcher to pitch through the seventh inning in what was a masterful performance. He gave up just two runs off six hits. Of the ten strikeouts he recorded, six of them were called strike threes.
With the game tied at two in the bottom of the seventh, CJ Conrad and Dallas Callahan drew back- to-back walks to begin the inning. With one out, Jonah Beamon singled to load the bases. Jake Plastiak then came up and hit a sacrifice fly to give the Sharks the lead. The Sharks bullpen forced the Salamanders to strand the tying run on third in both the eighth and ninth innings to hand McDaniels his first win of the season.
With the game scoreless in the top of the fourth, Chris Crabtree hit a one-out single for the Salamanders. A ground out advanced him to second. Dan Leckie then hit a double to score him and break the scoreless tie. The Sharks answered back in the bottom of the inning when Cory Everett led off with a single. He then stole second and came in to score on a single by Chad Fairey. Fairey's single extended his hit streak to eight consecutive games.
The Sharks added another run an inning later when Tilo Skole drew a one-out walk. He stole second and scored on a single by Beamon to put the Sharks up 2-1.
With two outs and nobody on in the top of the sixth, Crabtree hit a solo home run to tie the game at two before the Sharks answered in the seventh.
After the All-Star Break, the Sharks will be back in action Thursday night at the Shark Tank against the Holly Springs Salamanders. It is Thirsty Thursday featuring $1 Beers presented by Strickland's and 98.7 Coastal Carolina's Modern Rock. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM with the gates opening at 6:00PM.
