Sharks Jump out Early to Snap Skid

Fayetteville, North Carolina-The Wilmington Sharks took the early lead over the Fayetteville SwampDogs, snapping the nine-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory at JP Riddle Stadium. With the victory, the Sharks finished the first half of the season with a record of 8-18.

Steven Curry reached first to begin the game on a throwing error by SwampDogs shortstop Will Karp. With one out, Jacob Plastiak doubled him home to give the Sharks the early lead. Chad Fairey advanced Plastiak to third on a single. James Parker grounded out to score Plastiak and advance Fairey to second to make it 2-0. Clemente Inclan doubled home Fairey making it 3-0 Sharks.

With one out in the top of the second, Curry was hit by the pitch. He advanced to third on a single by Tucker Greer. Greer then stole second. Plastiak followed with another double, scoring both Curry and Greer, extending the Sharks lead to 5-0.

Landen Wright was outstanding in his first start of the season for the Sharks. In four shutout innings, he gave up only three hits and struck out two. Alex Fenton then pitched a pair of shutout innings and also struck out two. Fenton was ultimately awarded the win.

The SwampDogs put the first two on base to begin the bottom of the seventh against Sharks reliever Hunter Barbee who had just entered the game. Cameron Phelts grounded out to advance the runners to second and third. Carp grounded out scoring one run putting the SwampDogs on the board. After the groundout, Plastiak threw the ball from first back across the infield to throw out Yareb Martinez who tried to advance from second to third. The throw completed an unconventional inning ending double play.

The SwampDogs added another run in the eighth to cut it to 5-2. Alex Havlicek entered the game in the ninth to record his first save of the season for the Sharks.

The Sharks will return to the Shark Tank Tuesday night against the SwampDogs. It will feature another Postgame Fireworks Extravaganza. Mike Picollo (0-2, 6.57) will start on the mound for the Sharks. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM with the gates opening at 6:00PM.
