Wilmington Sharks News Release
Great players have always been a staple of Wilmington Sharks baseball, but this next signee may be the Sharks biggest splash in Coastal Plain League history. In his senior season at Whiteville High School this southpaw struck out 158 batters and finished with a 0.19 ERA.
Overall he was drafted #3 in the 2017 MLB Draft. This 19-year old spent last season in the Arizona Rookie League. In seven games, this young lefty was 0-1 with a 1.27 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP.
Think you know who this next signing is for the Sharks? Before signing with the Padres last season, he was committed to play baseball at East Carolina in Greenville, NC.
Coastal Plain League, good luck catching up to this guy's fastball in the mid 90's. Whiteville, North Carolina native Mackenzie Gore has signed with the Sharks for the 2018 summer. Thanks to new league rules, four players without college eligibility are allowed to sign with a CPL team.
He has four different batters that have fooled batters for years. Mackenzie Gore was 11-0 his senior year for Whiteville High School and led the Wolfpack to a third state title in four years.
At the end of the summer Gore is expected to return to the Padres organization. First, the Sharks hope the southpaw phenom can help lead Wilmington to its first Petitt Cup Championship since 1999.
