Wilmington Sharks News Release
Just one run separated the Sharks and Salamanders over 10 innings tonight at the Shark Tank. Both teams were scoreless until the top of the 10th . Wilmington (15-31, 8-13) committed its only error of the night and Holly Springs (20-28, 12-10) capitalized for a 1-0 triumph.
Eddie Hiott and Caden O'Brien were lights out for either side to begin the contest. Hiott tossed 7.1 innings of scoreless baseball. The junior from the Charleston Southern only allowed four hits and struck out eight. On the other side, O'Brien went six scoreless innings. The Salamanders lefty allowed just one hit and struck out seven.
The first real threat of the night came in the 8th inning for the Salamanders. Holly Springs loaded the bases with just one out. Sharks reliever Andrew Kaminsky with back-to-back highlight plays fielding his position. First, Kaminsky field a short chopper to the left side of the infield barehanded and threw home for the force out. Then, Daulton Martin ripped a line drive destined for either Kaminsky's head or center field. The Liberty freshman flashed his glove to make the play on the liner to end the inning, leaving the bases full of 'Manders.
In the 10th , Holly Springs scored the only run of the night. Carter Williams lead off the inning attempting to lay down a sacrifice bunt but the Sharks threw it away to allow a run to score and runners to advance to second in third. Wilmington's closer Keith Gabrielson (1-2) battled though to keep the Salamander to just one run. The Princeton University freshman struck out the next three to bring the Sharks to the plate.
Starting with runners on first and second proved costly in the bottom of the 10th . On the very first pitch of the inning, Paxton Wallace grounded into a 5-4-3 double play for two outs. Then, Dan Wilson struck out with a runner on third to end the contest. Jake Isbell (1-2) pitched the 10th to earn his first win.
With the loss, Wilmington drops to 8-13 in the 2nd half, four games behind Morehead City and hanging on to postseason hopes by a thread.
Wilmington is off tomorrow and then returns home to face the Wilson Tobs on Wednesday. First pitch from Buck Hardee Field is scheduled for 7:05. Wednesday is the final Jaws-N-Paws night of the summer. The game can be streamed here: portal.stretchinternet.com/cplsharks/
