Wilmington Sharks News Release

The Sharks, staring at defeat, were four strikes away from being shutout for the first time. Mason Streater launched his first homer of the summer to left to put Wilmington (6-13) on the board. However, it was not enough as Morehead City (15-3) won 5-1.

It was an inauspicious start for the Fins as starter Dylan Gibeau was taken out after one inning due to injury. The Sharks brought on Sam Luchansky (3-2) who worked 5.1 innings out of the bullpen. The junior from Belmont Abbey allowed five runs, just two earned, on 10 hits in his pseudo start.

The Marlins jumped on the scoreboard first in the fourth. Hunter Shepherd hit a sac fly to right to bring home the first run. Morehead City then added two more in the fifth.

With a 3-0 lead, the Marlins got back on the board in the seventh. Luchansky hit the first batter of the inning and then gave up two hits as the visitors got a couple more to take the 5-0 lead.

In the ninth, the Sharks avoided being shutout for the first time on the solo home run by Streater.

Sawyer Gipson-Long (1-0) went 6.1 innings of scoreless baseball allowing just four hits, while striking out 8. Sam Luchansky lost for the second time this year.

For the Sharks it was the 11th time an opponent has scored first; Wilmington is 2-9 in those contests. The Sharks are now 4-7 at home and have lost six in a row at the Shark Tank.

Next up, the Sharks are off tomorrow but hit the road Monday to face Morehead City in a doubleheader. First pitch of Game 1 is at 6:05, with Game 2 following approximately 30 minutes after. The Sharks Pregame Show begins at 5:50 Monday evening and all the action is available here: mixlr.com/wilmington-sharks-radio-network
