Wilmington Sharks News Release

Fayetteville, NC-The Wilmington Sharks played themselves out of playoff contention with five errors from the infield in Tuesday night's 4-1 loss to the Fayetteville SwampDogs at JP Riddle Stadium. The Sharks were the first to get on the scoreboard when Cory Everett singled to lead off the top of the fourth. He then stole second and scored on a single by Aaron McKeithan making it 1-0 Sharks.

The SwampDogs answered back when Alex Kachler was hit by the pitch to begin the bottom half. Brandon Talley advanced him to second with a single. Carson Bartels grounded to Sharks shortstop Tilo Skole. Skole threw to Jonah Beamon at second to retire Talley. Beamon then overthrew first in an attempt for a double play, allowing Kachler to score and tie the game at one.

Brian Williams was hit by the pitch to begin the fifth and Zach Walch drew a walk, putting two on with nobody out, ending the night for Sharks starter Mike Picollo. Cameron Phelts then hit into a double play. Konnor Piotto grounded to Beamon at second for what would have been the third out, but Beamon overthrew first again resulting in Williams scoring to give the SwampDogs the lead. Kachler then drew a walk. Talley and Bartels followed with back-to-back singles to make it 4-1 SwampDogs.

In Piccolo's four plus innings of work, he gave up two unearned runs off two hits. His second unearned run came in to score in the fifth after he had left the game, giving him the loss.

Henry Cartrett replaced Picollo in the fifth and struggled at first but was able to come back out and set the SwampDogs down in order in the sixth and the seventh. Erik Janss then came on in the eighth and pitched a perfect inning to keep the Sharks within striking distance.

The Sharks will return to the Shark Tank Wednesday night against the Florence RedWolves for Hurricane Night presented by Copycat Print Shop. Gates will open at 6:00PM for a 7:05PM first pitch.
